The Community Listening Project is an opportunity for you to discuss ideas and develop action plans that address community concerns and issues. You don’t need to have attended previously and you don’t have to be an ‘expert‘ - just a person interested in contributing to the success of community. Please feel free to bring anyone else who may be interested. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.

If you are unable to attend but would
like a record of the meeting, please contact us at: 612-521-4500 or email: cjames@northwaycom.org

Saturday, Nov. 12, 7:00 p.m. to midnight at International Market Square, the NAZ Ball attracted more than 700 people for an evening to remember.

The Northside Achievement Zone recognized the efforts of two NAZ partners and three NAZ families:

Urban Homeworks, NAZ Housing Lead, was
named NAZ Whole Family Support Partner of the Year.

Harvest Prep-SEED Academy, NAZ Anchor School, was named NAZ Education Pipeline Partner of the Year.

Gregory Wheeler, LaTonya Binion, Helena and Kathleen Neeley were recognized as NAZ Families of the Year.
Northside Achievement Zone’s children and families face serious challenges, but they’re working toward college in a way they never have before. Families are setting goals—many of them for the first time—with the help of the Education Goals Checklist. This checklist provides parents with a concrete, tangible tool to guide their child’s success, and serves as a reminder that there are things every family can do to improve their child’s education, regardless of personal circumstances. Education Checklist has three primary goals: 1) Be an active partner with this child’s teacher
2) Increase this child’s learning time
3) Build a culture of achievement at home

Seed funding from Northway Community Trust provided three years of support to get NAZ off the ground. Find out more about Northside Achievement Zone programs at www.northsideachievement.org/news/naz-connection-november-2011

Left: Gülgün Kayim, City of Minneapolis Director of Arts and Culture, speaking to the annual meeting of Northside Arts Collective, “We are the folks we’ve been waiting for.”

Northside Arts Collective (NAC) held its annual meeting on November 10th at Photography@The Center in North Minneapolis.

Five new board members were elected Nov. 10: Lynn Albright, Latrell Beamon, Keiona Cook, Andrea Eastman, and Larry Wiesner; joining those already serving: Mick Brogan, Pat Carney, Meg Corcoran, Geno Gelhaye and Robert Johnson.
Gülgün Kayim, City of Minneapolis Director of Arts and Culture was the keynote speaker for the evening. After touring North Minneapolis arts locations for a few hours, said she’d “touched the soul of it” a bit, and finds the area has much in common with where she came from. Ms. Kayim complimented Northside Arts Collective for being the first organization to ask her to speak. Robert Johnson, NAC president, reported organizational financial books in order after a year of rebuilding. NAC has maintained its newsletter, events and opportunities for artists. The organization is seeking a permanent home after the office in the 42nd Avenue Station was damaged in the May 2011 tornado. NorthWay Community Trust is an early supporter of NAC.
Thank you to all the generous people who donated on Give to the Max Day, November 16th to NorthWay Community Trust and other North Minneapolis non-profit organizations. We all depend on one another and will succeed if we can stick together.

Please remember that giving will make a difference on November 16th as well as the rest of the year. Click on the image to the left to link to giveMN.org.
