    (Northside-PAC) Fact Sheet

Minnesota continues to be one of the most prosperous states in the nation. Never the less, not all Minnesotans benefit from this prosperity. Communities throughout the state, face increasing rates of poverty; inadequate employment; increases in youth and gun violence; and a skyrocketing foreclosure rate. These issues, exacerbated by pronounced race and class disparities, disproportionately affect the North side of Minneapolis.

Northside Policy Action Coalition (NPAC) mobilizes community-members to access the legislative process and influence policy that impacts the Northside. Our objective is to increase awareness and motivate the African American community and other disenfranchised individuals and communities to realize their political power.

Urban and Suburban, Young and Old, Neighbors and Business Leaders

all coming together with a shared intent to put those legislative issues which will make a difference for the Northside … and the State … front and center with the people who hold power.

    Current members of Northside-PAC include:

  • Northway Community Trust
  • Northside Achievement Zone (NAZ)
  • Minneapolis Urban League
  • NorthPoint Health & Wellness Inc.

The July Listening Session was held at the University of Minnesota Urban Research and Outreach-Engagement Center (UROC) on Monday July 25th.

After funding the We Win Institute and Project Sweetie Pie, the evening began with a report from each of these organizations. Robert Woods outlined the progress Project Sweetie Pie has seen since first being recognized by the Listening Sessions and subsequently funded by NorthWay Community Trust.

Titilayo Bediako, the Executive Director of We Win Institute, followed with a progress report and hands on show-and-tell. She brought photos of the We Win Garden and produce the students harvested.

The discussion then turned to the 2005 Community Listening Project and the issues this earlier listening project outlined. Those issues include:

  • Diversity & preserving cultural and
    historical heritage
  • Clean & safe environment
  • Economic changes
  • Recreational space
  • Leadership
  • Health
  • Community engagement and involvement
  • Supporting families
  • Social services & health care
  • Wesley Walker, Executive Director of NorthWay Community Trust pointed out efforts and organizations that have taken on some of these issues. Other issues were raised in discussion such as the six neighborhoods most affected by the May 22nd tornado.

James Everett suggested that the Listening Sessions hold two meetings to sharpen the focus and redefine the UROC Community Benefits agreement.

This initiative was brought before the group as a motion, seconded and voted upon.

The next Listening Session will be Monday, August 22nd. Location to be determined. Contact Matthew McGlory to be notified with email updates.

James Everett posited the idea of revisiting the Community Benefits Agreement never established during the construction and opening of UROC.

    The NoMi Comprehensive
    Community Development is an
    initiative cultivating opportunity
    for Northside organizations and
    residents.

They bring together physical, human, wealth and capital to create equitable, sustainable community development.

    An equitable and prosperous
    Northside is inextricably linked to
    the long-term economic health and
    competitiveness of the Twin Cities
    metropolitan area.

    NoMi CCD has completed their
Investment Prospectus/Quality of Life plan and encourage you to use it in its current form at: www.investnorth.org.
Each page is presented as a printable PDF, so you can mix and match documents as needed to showcase your own projects & initiatives

within the context of other Northside
    efforts. CCD members will continue
to work together on how best to use
those pages in their collective and
    individual promotional efforts.

    “The CCD presents an exciting
opportunity to create connections and share ideas. There’s enough work for everybody and when we get in our lanes by being explicit and tangible about what our roles are, we’re able to leverage resources and creatively support each other, maximizing the impact. WIth all the pieces and all the people at the table, it really is a comprehensive community. How could we not be successful!”

    -Katya Pilling, Catalyst Community
    Partner’s interim Executive Director

NoMi CCD welcomed East Gateway Partnership, Catalyst Community Partners, and Northside Achievement Zone to the NoMi table at its last meeting. The group continues to develop new, and strengthen existing, relationships.

NoMi CCD has successfully supported a joint effort to secure a three hundred thousand dollar grant for FastTRAC programming focused on North Minneapolis. The grant award was made to the City of Minneapolis. NoMi CCD has been identified as a ‘convener’ to support the work and bring several Northside organizations’ services to strengthen the FastTRAC service model.

NoMi CCD is becoming recognized as a venue for policymakers and other stakeholders to reach and engage multiple organizations doing work with Northside residents.

There will likely be more opportunities going forward to help shape discussion about relocation of the North Minneapolis WorkForce Center and other related activities, as examples of opportunity. Emerge Community Development and NorthWay Community Trust are coconveners of NoMi CCD.

Dennis Spears announced the line-up for our fifth annual Legends season at the Capri Theater. The season opens with Regina Marie Williams in a tribute to the legendary Nina Simone. Regina is an award-winning

actress/singer. Her portrayal of Dinah Washington at Penumbra Theatre garnered many rave reviews.

Valentine’s weekend brings “Speak Low When You Speak Love” all male vocal review. Sanford Moore on piano will be joined by three very versatile male “low voiced” singers. Dennis Spears, Dennis Oglesby and Julius Collins.

Closing out The Legends season will be bandleader Rick Carlson along with balladeer Jason Richards in a tribute to Frank Sinatra. This thing is really going to swing. Close your eyes and you might be convinced that Frank is reincarnated!
