The Beam is designed to keep you up to date and in the loop on North Minneapolis partnerships, programs and people. This monthly "quick read" provides current news briefs from NorthWay Community Trust and its partners.

WHAT WE ARE ASKING: We want to partner with the community throughout this process that entails a commitment to attending the community dialogues and voicing your honest opinions on what we can do as a community to better North Minneapolis.

OUR PURPOSE: • Gathering North Minneapolis in the form of an ongoing community discussion • Developing new ideas and strategies to create a workable plan • Finding the resources to bring that plan to life

SOME OF THE GOALS SET FORTH IN 2005 • Build greater human and social capital: invest in people's skills and relationships • Increase citizen's health and wellness • Reduce poverty and increase individual and family wealth

SOME OF THE STRATEGIES SET FORTH IN 2005 • Create stronger alliances among key stakeholders • Build new leadership and relationships between individuals and organizations • Design a system to build human, social, and other capital in poor neighborhoods • Mobilize the Northside community toward building assets • Improve the public image of North Minneapolis
BACKGROUND: In 2005, key stakeholders in North Minneapolis developed a clear vision for the future of the Northside. These stakeholders, the Community Leadership Team, included leaders at NorthPoint Health & Wellness Center, members of its community Board and representatives from partner organizations. Collectively the team's defined vision of the community means North Minneapolis is a safer, healthier, and more economically prosperous community.

Over the course of that year, 476 people met in 44 separate groups for an open dialogue. The initiative brought together North Minneapolis residents and professionals. People from multiple ethnic and cultural groups were represented, as well as age groups, genders, and income levels. They included homeowners, renters and homeless individuals and families. NorthWay Community Trust and The Public Policy Project announced the 2011 edition of North Minneapolis Community and Advocacy Leadership Training. This week, 35 applicants are enrolled to fill the 25 spaces available in this very popular program.

The program prepares North Minneapolis residents to be proactive and make their voice and views on issues heard. Registrants will learn to become the powerful collective force of new leaders through direct organized action, to advocate for themselves in city, county, regional and state legislative decisions.

The program is twelve evening training sessions from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday nights, starting on January 4, 2011; followed by twelve weeks of field work experience and participation. The training sessions will be held at the Minneapolis Urban League - 2100 Plymouth Avenue North in Minneapolis.

At the present time, the last ten applicants of the group will be considered standbys in case enrollees are unable to complete the course. Demand for this course is strong. A second session will depend on funding.
Northside Achievement Zone convened the NAZ Forum mid-December, a quarterly meeting of participating organizations. They discussed collective strategies, tracked progress and alignment to ensure Northside kids are college ready. This meeting primary focused on the first class of Family Academy and stories from our Engagement Team. Look for specific stories in future issues of The BEAM.
