BACKGROUND:
In 2005, key stakeholders in North Minneapolis developed
a clear vision for the future of the Northside. These
stakeholders, the Community Leadership Team, included
leaders at NorthPoint Health & Wellness Center, members
of its community Board and representatives from partner
organizations. Collectively the team's defined vision of the
community means North Minneapolis is a safer, healthier,
and more economically prosperous community.
Over the course of that year, 476 people met in 44 separate groups for an open dialogue. The initiative brought together North Minneapolis residents and professionals. People from multiple ethnic and cultural groups were represented, as well as age groups, genders, and income levels. They included homeowners, renters and homeless individuals and families.

Since The Capri Theatre renovated its interior, including
a complete upgrade to their vital sound and lighting
system, they have staged legendary musical talent from
local to international artists; making The Capri a premium
performance venue. They remain committed to emerging
artists in music, dance and fashion. All have found
enthusiastic audiences. At the close of 2010, The BEAM
celebrates The Capri's year in review.
Sanford Moore kicked off the year with a reprise of
his Legend series performance covering music that
influenced his career: musical theater, classical, jazz,
blues and gospel.
The Brass Messengers delivered Gypsy Brass Eastern
European music, and their take on American music.
Valentine's eve saw romantic tunes served up by Regina
Williams, T. Mychael Rambo and Thomasina Petrus.
Each took turns musically with their handpicked songs.
Thomasina Petrus also staged Daughters of Africa,
honoring three centuries of African American women.
Milo Fine made a rare public appearance, bringing his
unique style of free jazz and improvised music.
Guitarist Jef Cierniak's jazz concert was followed
by blues guitar concerts by The Bourbones and The
Brothers Curtis. Then, Kenna Sarge and the Voice of
Culture Drum and Dance Group joined Kenn Wanaku,
SUNplug'd in a double bill.
"Legends" series hosted "Down on Broadway." Recorded
for CD release, artistic director, Dennis Spears headlined
the show, with Sanford Moore on piano, Jay Young
on bass, Daryl Boudreaux on percussion and Steven
Jennings on drums. The song listed hits from Funny Girl,
Showboat, The Wiz and Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Minnesota's "First Lady of Song," Debbie Duncan,
returned with the Great American Songbook in June.
September saw Qe' Bella Fashion Show, Keiona Cook's
Benefit for the Inner City KIds.
In October, BLUE, Songs on the Indigo Side featured
Nancy Harms, Katie Gearty and Rachel Holder. Every
song featured the word "blue."
Who's Got Talent Dance Showcase, A Celebration of
Music and Movement filled The Capri in November.
GETTING OUT, A Story of Hope, Forgiveness &
Redemption is a play written and produced by the
students of PYC, Arts and Technology High School.
NorthWay Community Trust has been a generous
supporter of PCY who owns The Capri Theater.
At the end of 2010 The Capri was host to the St. Paul
Chamber Orchestra and The Capri Big Band "Home for
the Holidays Concert".

NorthWay Community Trust and The Public Policy Project announced the
2011 edition of North Minneapolis Community and Advocacy Leadership
Training. This week, 35 applicants are enrolled to fill the 25 spaces available in
this very popular program.
The program prepares North Minneapolis residents to be proactive and make
their voice and views on issues heard. Registrants will learn to become the
powerful collective force of new leaders through direct organized action,
to advocate for themselves in city, county, regional and state legislative
decisions.
The program is twelve evening training sessions from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday nights,
starting on January 4, 2011; followed by twelve weeks of field work experience and
participation. The training sessions will be held at the Minneapolis Urban
League - 2100 Plymouth Avenue North in Minneapolis.
At the present time, the last ten applicants of the group will be considered
standbys in case enrollees are unable to complete the course. Demand for
this course is strong. A second session will depend on funding.
