North Minneapolis welcomed President Jimmy Carter early this month as he visited Hawthorne Neighborhood, celebrating the work of Habitat for Humanity in this area. True to form, he and his wife, Roslynn Carter, picked up their tools and went to work on one of our local homes currently under construction. Walter Mondale, Carter’s former vice president, Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn and Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak joined President Carter and a crew of volunteers as they got down to the real work of the organization. The home makeover was part of a week long tour hosted by the Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity. This project was designed to spotlight the nation’s need for affordable housing. Human rights has always been a centerpiece of Carter’s career. “Although we’ve given almost 2 million people [worldwide] homes, there are still a billion people who need them,’’ Carter said at a news conference Wednesday. NorthWay’s own, Wesley Walker, is an HH board member and long time volunteer, both locally and internationally. Walker was a pioneer in the trend of “volunteer vacations,” donating his time off for travel to build Habitat for Humanity homes. Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter arrived in North Minneapolis at 8:30 a.m. and visited each of the 12 Habitat houses in the Hawthorne neighborhood, posing for photos with volunteers, homeowners and neighbors. President Carter described the Hawthorne Neighborhood “the nicest neighborhood I ever worked in."
Another dream is about to come true on West Broadway. The Kindred Kitchen Grand Opening will take place on November 11th with an invitation only reception at 3pm and open to the public at 4pm. Kitchens Operation Manager, Terese Hill has promised there will be plenty of tasty samples typical of the kind of food that will be produced in the two side by side gleaming commercial kitchens. A rentable commercial kitchen in the heart of North Minneapolis, caterers looking to expand their business, chefs and food manufacturers in need of space and startup food services, will find a home at Kindred Kitchen. Kindred Kitchen offers a full-service, licensed commercial kitchen, and services for food entrepreneurs from food industry training to business and technical services. NorthWay Community Trust has been supporting this project since its inception. You will find them on the web at www.kindredkitchen.org
Terese Hill is the new Kindred Kitchens Operation Manager. For the past eight years she has worked in the food industry: restaurants, food retail, farmer’s markets, concession stands, healthcare nutrition and now teaching. A graduate of Saint Catherine’s University with a B.S. in Foods & Nutrition and Business, she currently spends two afternoons a week instructing students. Favorite pastimes include cooking, baking, running and reading and she will never turn down an opportunity to try a new restaurant! “There is no better way to connect with people than with food,” says Ms.Hill.
If a modern, well organized website is a sign of the health of an organization, then Northside Achievement Zone is in the prime of its life. The new NAZ site is not only better looking than before, but the site is just full of useful material. You can find the current NAZ Pilot Schools or sign up for NAZ updates to hear about upcoming events sponsored by NAZ and see developments in its dynamic program. You will find links to all the NAZ partners and staff, and an extensive catalog of media links as well as opportunities to become involved. It’s an important cause and a content rich website. The site will be using a cleverly designed gage to easily follow the results NAZ is achieving.
Entertaining and engaging, the new NAZ web site is as colorful as it is informative. http://www.northsideachievement.org
The politics of food are generally well below the surface of urban development decisions. For too long, we’ve been too short on good food markets in North Minneapolis. An outdoor market, coming to W Broadway this spring, expands food alternatives and gives other Twin Citians more reasons to wander North. Erin Jerabek, Programs and Engagement Mgr., and intern, Alicia Uzarek presented their research to interested North Minneapolis neighbors. The committee formed by the attendees at this October 25th meeting have agreed that there should be a preference for vendors from the Northside. Inquiries about an open air market can be directed to Erin Jerabek at erin@westbroadway.org 2101 West Broadway was transformed with lights and color into a fabulous gala on September 25th. The 7th Annual “Peace Ball” celebrates the work of the Northside Achievement Zone collaborative which promotes success and aims to reduce crime through education. The Soul Tight Committee provided the music. There was food, drinks, and a silent auction, and a rousing speech by Sondra Samuels, founder of the Peace Foundation, now transformed into the Northside Achievement Zone.
