National Recognition for NorthWay

The National Association of Planning Councils (NAPC) held its annual conference in Minneapolis, May 3-5. One session featured NorthWay Board Chair John Helgeland and Research & Evaluation Program Manager Allan Malkis leading a roundtable discussion on NorthWay's approach to community building.

On May 5, all conference participants took a Minneapolis area bus tour, which included several NorthWay partners. The first stop was the new office of Emerge at 1101 West Broadway where staff described several initiatives including NorthWay investments in NEON and StreetWerks. The next stop was the Ripley Gardens housing development at Penn & Glenwood. Matthew Hendricks of Central Community Housing Trust discussed the neighborhood-driven nature of the project, made possible in part by a 2005 NorthWay partnership investment. In recognition of its part in organizing the conference, NorthWay was awarded a free membership in the Association for 2007-8.

NAPC is a private, non-profit national organization which promotes quality community planning and supports its members as they provide leadership for community-based human services and health planning and action.

Housing Research Project Underway

NorthWay and several Northside Neighborhood Alliance (NNA) organizations are beginning a project to investigate fraudulent investments in North Minneapolis housing. Alyssa Erickson, a University of Minnesota graduate student, will work with Allan Malkis to review possible instances for "predatory investing" by landlords who get inflated mortgages or who let property deteriorate. For more information, contact Allan Malkis at NorthWay.
