On Saturday, May 19 from 6-8pm, more than 1,000 neighbors from North Minneapolis and around the community will stand together, side-by-side on Penn Avenue North (from W. Broadway to Lowry Avenue North), to make a collective statement that peace will prevail over violence in the city this summer. A graduate research assistant from the University of Minnesota will work with NorthWay and several neighborhood associations to study mortgage fraud on the Northside. Neighborhood Participation for Community Revitalization (NPCR) of the Center for Urban & Regional Affairs (CURA) will cover the bulk of the costs for a student to work this summer with local residents to identify schemes that often leave properties abandoned. The idea for this project came from a March meeting with community housing activists and researchers. For more information, contact Allan Malkis. New committee works to assess NorthWay’s valueNorthWay’s evaluation advisory group met for the first time April 17. Members are Kim Aguilar (Northside Child Development Center), Makram El-Amin (El-Amin’s Fish House and local resident), Roger Banks (Council on Black Minnesotans), Ronda Marie Chakolis (University of Minnesota Fellow in Healthy Youth Development), Philip Hannam (local resident), Jewelean Jackson (local resident), Dr. Joanna Ramirez-Barrett (NorthPoint Health & Wellness Center), Billie Jo Seifert (NorthWay Board) and Jim Wentzell (Northside Marketing Task Force). The evaluation advisory group will work with staff to develop a plan to track NorthWay’s impact on North Minneapolis and keep the board and community informed.
