The Board of Directors for NorthWay
Community Trust held a dinner
celebration to benefit community
members, volunteers, partnerships,
programs and people of North
Minneapolis. The gathering was the
first of several planned events to tell
the NorthWay story. The story of
NorthWay is the story of North
Minneapolis. It is also an opportunity
to ask for donations to NorthWay to
continue its important work on the
Northside. Without NorthWay some of
the most important collaborations like
the Northside Achievement Zone
would not have happened in north
Minneapolis. We need your support to
continue this very important work.
Nothando Zulu of the board thrilled
listeners with fables. She was followed
by a passionate keynote address from
Sondra. The theme of the evening
drives home the importance of
community engagement to make
things possible. |

The Hawthorne Eco-Village groundbreaking was attended by dignitaries and residents of the neighborhood. This four block area used to be one of the roughest parts of North Minneapolis. Frozen ground and several layers of snow made groundbreaking difficult. It was symbolized by shoveling a path in the snow to green door.
Short speeches were delivered outside in the below zero temperatures at 400 31st Avenue North. Longer speeches were delivered in the warmth at Farview Park.
The Eco-Village area has turned around from crime-ridden, decrepit buildings to a peaceful in eighteen months.

The Northside Achievement Zone has been operational for over two years, striving to guarantee opportunities, support and education for all children growing up within its boundaries. Our goal is to ensure that all of the children in the Zone are ready for college. In order to achieve such an ambitious goal, the collaborative has defined three core strategy areas: educational impact, family engagement and strategic coordination.

January 15th, 2010
State Representative, Bobby Jo Champion and Bill Strickland, President and CEO of Manchester Bidwell Corporation packed the Urban Research and Outreach/Engagement Center (“UROC”) at 2001 Plymouth Avenue North.
Mr. Strickland outlined the Manchester Bidwell philosophy and the plans for the Twin Cities Center for Arts and Technology (TCCAT). TCCAT hopes to replicate the concept of NCAT providing arts programming connected to educational achievement and job training in medical lab and culinary arts for adults.
The search for locations continues. “We’ve toured twenty five locatons this week,” said Amy Mihalcin, Center for Arts and Technology Community Liason.

NAC has partnered with WomenVenture and the City of Minneapolis to provide its business classes called "Planning to Succeed", at the Shiloh Temple starting Thursday, January 28th, from 6:00 to 9.00 p.m. The classes will meet once a week for six weeks. These classes teach the basics entrepreneurs need to know about starting and operating a business and help write a business plan. They also teach the basics of book keeping and how to read financial statements. Even if you have an existing business, but never wrote a business plan; this might be a good opportunity to do so.
